Does Every Crying Baby Have Colic?

Mid Sussex Times, 2015

The most common babies I am seeing for treatment at The Perrymount clinic are upset, crying, irritable babies. And these babies aren’t crying because they are tired, hungry or need a change of nappy.

The parents wish they were only crying because of that!

These babies are crying for no understandable reason and they have been fed and changed and they still cry and they won’t settle into a deep sleep or routine.

Part of my job is to figure out why this is. Once myself and the parents have worked out together what we think the main reasons behind their baby being upset are then my treatment plan can be targeted to help them be happy and sleeping much quicker. And by this I mean the baby and parents being happy and sleeping!

Most parents come in not understanding what is wrong with their baby but they have noticed that often wind or tummy pain is involved so they think of colic as the answer. However, they haven’t actually got an answer, they just have name for the problem, which doesn’t overly help their baby.

On top of this my experience tells me very clearly that colic has many different CAUSES. Once you have worked the cause out then you can help you baby much quicker. So to some degree many of the babies I see have some sort of colic, but what sort of colic? Is it colic because they are windy from their formula? Is it colic because they had a C-section? Is it colic because they had a forceps or ventouse delivery? Is it because they don’t latch well if breast feeding?

Each of these can actually be a trigger in colic and I have many more reasons behind a colicky, upset baby that investigate. I will go through these in future articles. What I want to get across to you though, if right now you are feeling helpless with a non-stop crying baby; is that there is virtually always a reason behind them crying and it is possible to fix that in some way.

For example, often babies that have had a forceps or ventouse or a long, difficult delivery don’t latch very well. This is because they might have some tension around their head from the instrument delivery that alters their latch or suck. In turn they take in more air when feeding which then gives them wind or colic discomfort. Using cranial osteopathy I can very gentle help the baby with these tensions so their latch improves, they take less air in and the windy, colicky tummy is able to settle.
