Lifestyle by Carolyn Nicholas
Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach (Candidate) & Natural Chef

From a Functional Medicine perspective, we all have the 5 main pillars which are the foundation to our own personal health and well-being. These are the Modifiable Lifestyle Factors which include Sleep & Relaxation, Movement, Eating & Food Choices, Relationships, and Stress. Take a good look at your day to day routine:
➡️ How do you feel?
➡️ Do you get the minimum of 7 hours of sleep per night?
➡️ Are you making the right food choices for your body?
➡️ Do you get movement each day in the form of something you enjoy doing?
➡️ Do your relationships bring you joy or are they draining you in some way?
➡️We all have stress in our lives but the question is how do you manage it?

Our bodies don’t care if it is a big stress or a little one. Anxiety, stress, and anger all depress the immune system which can lead to health issues if left attended. We can influence how you respond to stress whether it is through deep, diaphragmatic breathing, mindfulness, guided imagery or other mind-body techniques.  The Perrymount offers lots of ways to help you reframe your stress. Cranial Osteopathy by Christian Bates
Osteopath & Naturopath

Cranial osteopathy is a very gentle form of osteopathy. Although it is a physical treatment that is hands-on it is so gentle that it can be used on babies. One of the main ways cranial osteopathy is thought to be beneficial is that it is calming on the nervous system, mainly by calming the “fight or flight” side and strengthening the parasympathetic side which is the “rest and digest” side. If you are looking for a hands-on treatment to reduce stress then this treatment maybe suited to you, particularly if you would prefer a very gentle approach. To book a treatment click here.

Homeopathy by Kathryn Sampson
Homeopath & EFT Practitioner

Homeopathy is a safe and effective system of medicine. There are literally thousands of homeopathic remedies and one of them will be suited to your unique symptoms of stress.
I am interested in how you experience stress physically and your emotional responses too.

So somebody who withdraws when feeling anxious would need a remedy suited to their unique symptoms. Someone who becomes restless and agitated when anxious would need another remedy. Other people become paralysed by fear and making decisions becomes a challenge. Homeopathy is individualised medicine. One of these remedies will be suited to the way you experience stress. It is my job and my pleasure to understand which one will reduce your anxiety and transform the way you experience stress.

EFT by Kathryn Sampson
Homeopath & EFT Practitioner

EFT is an excellent technique used to heal stress and anxiety naturally.
By tapping on the acupressure points with our fingertips whilst focusing on our issue we can release the blocked energy that is causing our symptoms of anxiety and stress. It can be used for anything from anxiety about public speaking to fear of flying and panic attacks.
EFT is very easy to learn and an effective technique to use with children.

X-hail by Liz

It’s like meditation but not quite… Before you run for the hills at the thought of a vow of silence, just know that the techniques and tools that we use at X-HAIL  are not your usual crossed-legged, meditation type techniques. Nutrition: Supplements to support stress by Christian Bates
Osteopathy & Naturopathy

The correct nutritional supplements when targeted to the underlying CAUSE of stress can be hugely beneficial in taking the strain of stress out of the physiology of the body. What the supplements do is act as a buffer between your stress trigger and the stress-causing a symptom in you. For example, anxiety causing acid reflux.

The stressful trigger often remains, such as your job, but it doesn’t affect you so much. In this example the stress of work may not trigger the acid reflux. In the meantime you can use other stress-reducing help at The Perrymount to help you cope with the stress of work.
Using the Avatar to measure the energetic health of your internal organs Christian is able to see which organs are best supported by the supplements. For example adrenal glands, thyroid, nervous system (sympathetic or parasympathetic), digestion, bowel, liver and more. Nutrition: Blood sugar balancing by Christian Bates
Osteopathy & Naturopathy

Blood sugar refers to the amount of sugar that is running around in our bloodstream. The body controls this very nicely with different hormones, either increasing blood sugar or decreasing it according to what you have eaten, exercised, stress levels and most likely 100’s of other reasons.

A well-known blood sugar problem is diabetes where insulin, the hormone that takes sugar OUT the blood isn’t functioning and therefore the blood sugar becomes too high, which is dangerous. As is too low blood sugar. What we are after is the correct balance, controlled naturally by the body. This will actually fluctuate during the day and will naturally go up after meals and the body will control that back to safe levels.

Interestingly, low blood sugar is controlled by cortisol which is a stress hormone. This means that eating to balance blood sugar actually has a stress-relieving result too because not so much cortisol is released. Have you heard of the term “Hangry”? This is being hungry and angry. This happens due to low blood sugar causing a stress response. The bottom line is that eating erratically can make you stressed.

Are you inflamed or do you have a weak digestive system?
By Christian Bates Osteopath & Naturopath

Do you know the amazing interconnectedness of the human body? Did you know that inflamed joints or poor digestion of foods or poor absorption of foods will all create a stress response in the body?

It’s not only emotional stress that is a source of “stress”. Physical factors and physiological factors are stressing on the body too, as explained in the blood sugar paragraph above. A physical example could be running the marathon or over-exercising. These are all “stressors” too.

If you are feeling that your body is having a stress response but you don’t have a particularly stressful life then there are many other lifestyle factors that could be involved. The Perrymount Clinic can help with many of these factors, such as food plans, diet, food intolerances, hormone imbalances and bowel issues. Give us a call or email our health concierge Carolyn on carolyn@theperrymount.com if you have any questions about a health problem and how we might be able to help you.

Acupuncture for stress and anxiety by Alison Dalziel
Acupuncturist

It has been proposed that anxiety is a pathological feature representative of modern times, and one which has increased as a consequence of socio-political influences in recent years (Bandelow & Michaelis, 2015).

Research has shown that acupuncture treatment may specifically benefit anxiety disorders and symptoms of anxiety by:
✅ Acting on areas of the brain known to reduce sensitivity to pain and stress, as well as promoting relaxation and deactivating the 'analytical' brain, which is responsible for anxiety and worry (Hui 2010).
✅ Stress activates the sympathetic nervous system, while acupuncture can activate the opposing parasympathetic nervous system, which initiates the relaxation response.
✅ Reversing pathological changes in levels of inflammatory cytokines that are associated with anxiety (Arranz 2007)
✅ Reversing stress-induced changes in behaviour and biochemistry (Kim 2009).

Stress Leads to Anxiety by Helen Were
 Acupuncturist

Acupuncture can be safely combined with conventional treatments such as medication or psycho-educational therapy, possibly enhancing their beneficial effects (Courbasson 2007) and reducing unwanted side-effects (Yuan 2007).

Anxiety can also make other existing health issues worse, such as irritable bowel syndrome, tension headaches and migraines, back pain, dizziness, tingling sensations, a fear of losing control, and a fear of dying.

In Chinese Medicine the mind and digestive system are closely linked, and any trauma or situation we find difficulty resolving mentally can cause damage to the digestive system and the mind.

Acupuncture treatments work to help relieve anxiety and stress by regulating levels of neurotransmitters and hormones such as serotonin, noradrenaline and dopamine and helping to alter the brain’s mood chemistry to combat negative feelings.
